The safari packing list
What to bring on a game drive, a cultural trip or the coast — with the reason each item is on the list, and the two things that are actually against the law to pack.
mountkenyahikes.com/pack/
Luggage
Pack soft. A duffel or holdall fits a safari vehicle locker and a light-aircraft hold; a hard suitcase frequently does not, and on a small plane it will simply be refused.
If your itinerary includes an internal flight — the Arusha/Kilimanjaro to Zanzibar hop on our grand tours, for example — the baggage allowance is far tighter than an international ticket, typically 15 to 20kg including hand luggage. We confirm the exact figure for your flight before you travel. Do not guess it.
Anything you do not need on safari can stay at your hotel in Nairobi, Arusha or Moshi. We store it free while you are out.
What you wear
Colour is not a style question out here — it decides how close you get and what bites you.
On your feet
Sun, insects and health
Book the health conversation six to eight weeks before you fly, not the week before.
Actually seeing things
This is the section that decides what your safari was like.
Bags, money and paperwork
If you are adding the coast
Zanzibar, Diani and the marine parks.
Do not pack these — they come with the trip
Included in the price. Bringing your own is welcome, but nobody needs to buy any of it.
A 4x4 Land Cruiser with a pop-up roof And a window seat guaranteed — we do not fill middle seats.
A professional driver-guide Ours, salaried, and the reason you find anything at all.
All park, conservancy and crater fees Including the Ngorongoro descent fee where your itinerary needs it.
Drinking water during game drives Refilled daily — bring the bottle, not the water.
All meals as per your itinerary Full board on the camping and lodge trips.
Camping equipment Tent, sleeping mat, camp chairs and table on the camping safaris, plus a camp cook and all cooking kit.
Airport or hotel pick-up and drop-off As set out on your tour page.
Still missing something after all that? Tell us when you book. Don't buy a whole wardrobe for one trip before you've asked us what can be sorted out in Nanyuki or Moshi.
Before you book anything
The requirements that decide whether the climb goes well — none of which are gear.
Health
See your doctor or a travel clinic six to eight weeks before you fly. Some antimalarials have to be started before you travel, and routine vaccinations may need boosting.
A yellow fever certificate is required to enter Tanzania if you are arriving from a country where yellow fever is a risk — and Kenya counts, so anyone crossing overland on our Kenya-and-Tanzania trips needs one. Carry the certificate itself, not a photo of it.
Malaria is present across most of our safari areas. Repellent at dusk and covered arms and legs do most of the work; tablets do the rest.
Documents and insurance
Travel insurance is mandatory on every trip we run. It must cover medical costs and emergency evacuation — the distances out here are the reason.
A passport valid for at least six months beyond your travel dates, with blank pages for stamps. Overland crossings use up more pages than you would expect.
Entry permission arranged before you fly: Kenya and Tanzania both run online systems, and the rules change. Check the current requirement for your nationality well before you book flights, and ask us if anything is unclear.
Bring a printed copy of your insurance policy and your itinerary. Signal is not guaranteed where you are going.
What the days are actually like
Early. Game moves at dawn and dusk, so most drives leave between 6 and 6.30am. The middle of the day is for lunch and a rest.
Long, and rough. Serengeti and Tsavo roads shake a vehicle apart; a transfer that looks like 120km on a map can take four hours. If you get car sick, bring what works for you.
Nothing is guaranteed. We can put you in the right place at the right season — river crossings from July to October, calving in the southern Serengeti in January and February — but wild animals have not read the itinerary. A guide who promises you a leopard is not being straight with you.

Take it with you
Point a phone at this and the whole list opens — no app, no sign-up, nothing to install. It's on the wall of our Nanyuki office and on the back of our vehicles, so scan it there too.

Or have it emailed
The same list, with the reasons attached, in your inbox — where you can open it in the shop and tick it off while you pack. The whole thing is free on this page either way; the email is just easier to carry.
