Overview

Hell's Gate is the rare Kenyan national park you explore under your own power. The day starts with a gentle cycle along Buffalo Circuit — zebra, giraffe, warthog and gazelle grazing beside the track, towering sandstone cliffs on either side — before trading the bikes for a guided walk down into Ol Njorowa Gorge, a slot canyon carved smooth by water, past hot springs and the rock towers that inspired the Pride Lands in The Lion King. A picnic lunch under the cliffs, time at the viewpoints over the Rift Valley, and an optional stop at Lake Naivasha for a boat ride among the hippos round out the day. Easy fitness level, superb photography, and one of the best-value adventure days out of Nairobi.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Depart Nairobi at 07:00 and drive to Hell's Gate National Park (approx. 2 hours). Upon arrival, we rent bikes and cycle into the park, passing zebra, giraffe, and buffalo. We leave our bikes at the ranger post and hike into the spectacular Olkaria Gorges with a local guide. After lunch, we cycle back to the gate. Return to Nairobi in the late afternoon (approx. 17:00).
