Lake Natron
A dramatic alkaline lake and flamingo breeding ground beneath an active volcano.
About Lake Natron
Lake Natron is a dramatic alkaline lake in northern Tanzania at the base of the Great Rift Valley escarpment. Its mineral-rich, blood-red waters -- coloured by salt-loving microorganisms -- are the sole breeding ground for East Africa's 2.5 million lesser flamingos. The stark, otherworldly landscape of salt flats, volcanic rock, and the towering Ol Doinyo Lengai volcano creates one of Tanzania's most visually striking and least-visited destinations.
