Nyerere (Selous) Game Reserve Camping Safari
Africa's largest wildlife reserve with game drives, boat safaris, and walking safaris on the Rufiji River.
Overview
Escape the crowds and explore Africa's largest protected wildlife area on a 3-day safari that combines traditional game drives with unique boat safaris along the mighty Rufiji River. Nyerere National Park (formerly Selous) is one of the last great wilderness areas, home to large populations of elephants, hippos, crocodiles, wild dogs, and lions. The combination of vehicle, boat, and optional walking safaris creates a richly varied experience found nowhere else in Tanzania.
Highlights
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Arrive at Nyerere/Selous by road from Dar es Salaam (6 hours) or by scheduled flight (45 minutes). After lunch at camp, head out for an afternoon game drive through the reserve's diverse habitats. Search for elephants, giraffes, lions, and the park's famous wild dog packs. Return to camp for dinner under the stars.
Activities
Morning game drive through the woodland and grassland areas tracking predators in the golden light. After a bush picnic lunch, board a boat for an afternoon safari on the Rufiji River. Glide past pods of hippos, basking crocodiles, and spectacular waterbirds including fish eagles, kingfishers, and herons.
Activities
Optional guided walking safari through the bush to experience the wilderness on foot -- tracking animal prints, learning about medicinal plants, and feeling the thrill of being in wild Africa without a vehicle. Return to camp for brunch, then transfer to airstrip or begin the road journey back.
