Kilimanjaro Rongai Route
Kilimanjaro's gentlest route approaching from the quiet northern slopes near Kenya with wilderness solitude.
Overview
The Rongai Route is the only path that approaches Kilimanjaro from the north, near the Kenya border, offering a distinctly different perspective of the mountain. Its gentle, steady gradient makes it the most suitable route for less experienced trekkers, while the quiet, wilderness-rich northern slopes provide a more secluded experience with excellent chances of spotting wildlife. The 7-day itinerary includes an acclimatization day at Mawenzi Tarn with dramatic views of Mawenzi Peak.
Highlights
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Drive from Moshi past Marangu town to the Nalemoru/Rongai Gate (1,950m) near the Kenya border. Trek 3-4 hours through cultivated farmland and pine forest into natural montane forest. Arrive at Simba Camp (2,650m) with views across the Kenyan plains.
Activities
Continue through moorland, ascending steadily with views of Mawenzi and Kibo. The 5-6 hour trek passes through heather zone where wildlife sightings (blue monkeys, bushbuck) are possible. Arrive at Kikelewa Camp (3,630m) beneath the jagged Mawenzi peaks.
Activities
A steep but short 3-4 hour climb to Mawenzi Tarn (4,330m), a small alpine lake set dramatically at the foot of the towering Mawenzi pinnacles. Arrive by lunchtime with the entire afternoon for acclimatization hikes and exploration.
Activities
Spend the day acclimatizing with optional hikes around Mawenzi Ridge and the Tarn. The dramatic cliffs of Mawenzi tower above camp while views of Kibo stretch to the west. Essential day for altitude adjustment before the summit push.
Activities
Cross the barren lunar saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo on a gradual 4-5 hour trek to Kibo Hut (4,700m). The stark, moon-like landscape is otherworldly. Arrive by early afternoon, eat dinner early, and attempt to rest before the midnight summit call.
Activities
Depart at midnight, climbing through the dark by headtorch. Reach Gilman's Point (5,685m) on the crater rim at sunrise, then continue to Uhuru Peak (5,895m). Descend via the Marangu route to Horombo Hut (3,720m). A demanding 12-16 hour day.
Activities
Descend through moorland and rainforest to Marangu Gate (1,860m) in 5-6 hours. Collect your summit certificate and transfer to your hotel.
