Overview

The Marangu Route is the oldest and most established path to the summit of Kilimanjaro, earning its 'Coca-Cola Route' nickname for its relative popularity and hut accommodation. It is the only route offering dormitory-style sleeping huts with mattresses at Mandara, Horombo, and Kibo camps, making it a comfortable choice for climbers who prefer a roof overhead. The 6-day itinerary includes a crucial acclimatization day at Horombo Hut, significantly boosting summit success rates to around 75-80%.

Highlights

Only Kilimanjaro route with comfortable hut accommodation
Well-graded trail through 5 ecological zones
Acclimatization day at Horombo Hut (3,720m) boosts summit success
Approach and descent on the same path -- shortest route
75-80% summit success rate on the 6-day itinerary

Day-by-Day Itinerary

After breakfast at your hotel, drive to Marangu Gate (1,860m) for registration and final gear check. Begin your trek through lush montane rainforest alive with birdsong and colobus monkeys. The well-maintained trail climbs gradually for 3-4 hours through dense vegetation before arriving at Mandara Hut (2,700m), a cluster of wooden A-frame huts nestled in the forest.

Leave the forest canopy behind and enter the heather and moorland zone. The landscape opens up dramatically with views of Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. The steady 5-6 hour climb passes through giant heather and groundsel plants unique to East African mountains. Arrive at Horombo Hut (3,720m) with stunning views across the saddle.

A vital rest day for altitude acclimatization. Take an optional guided hike toward Mawenzi Ridge (up to 4,200m) before returning to Horombo for lunch. The 'climb high, sleep low' strategy dramatically improves your chances of reaching the summit. Spend the afternoon resting, hydrating, and enjoying the mountain views.

Cross the alpine desert saddle between Kibo and Mawenzi peaks on a long but gradual 6-7 hour trek. The barren, moon-like landscape offers sweeping views in every direction. Pass the last water point before arriving at Kibo Hut (4,700m) at the base of the Kibo crater wall. Eat an early dinner and rest before midnight summit attempt.

Continue 1-2 hours along the crater rim past glaciers to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) -- the Roof of Africa. Celebrate, take photos, then descend all the way to Horombo Hut for the night.
