Kilimanjaro Lemosho Route
Kilimanjaro's most scenic route with the highest success rate (90-95%) and superb acclimatization over 8 days.
Overview
The Lemosho Route is widely regarded as Kilimanjaro's most scenic and best-balanced climbing route, offering an 8-day itinerary that maximises acclimatization and delivers summit success rates of 90-95%. Starting from the remote western Londorossi Gate, the route passes through pristine rainforest, across the vast Shira Plateau, past Lava Tower, over the Barranco Wall, and through alpine desert to the summit. Lower foot traffic in the first days gives it a true wilderness feel before joining the Machame path for the final approach.
Highlights
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Drive from Arusha through West Kilimanjaro countryside to Londorossi Gate (2,385m) for registration. Enter the rainforest on a quiet trail, trekking 2-3 hours to Forest Camp (2,780m) in a clearing surrounded by ancient trees and howling colobus monkeys.
Activities
Continue through the forest zone, emerging into heather and moorland. The 4-5 hour trek gains 720 metres as the landscape opens with views of Kibo ahead. Arrive at Shira 1 Camp (3,500m) on the western edge of the vast Shira Plateau.
Activities
Traverse the Shira Plateau eastward toward Kibo, passing through moorland meadows with wildflowers. Continue past Shira 2 Camp to the more remote Moir Hut (4,200m) beneath the dramatic Lent Group pinnacles. Excellent acclimatization day with afternoon exploration hikes.
Activities
Ascend to the Lava Tower (4,630m) for a hot lunch with panoramic views, then descend steeply to Barranco Camp (3,950m). This 'climb high, sleep low' day is essential for acclimatization. The route crosses the spectacular Arrow Glacier valley.
Activities
Scramble up the iconic Barranco Wall -- a steep but non-technical climb that is one of the trek's highlights. Continue through alpine desert, crossing several valleys to reach Karanga Camp (3,995m).
Activities
A shorter 3-4 hour trek to summit base camp at Barafu (4,640m). Rest, hydrate, and prepare for summit night. Your guide will conduct a final briefing. Early dinner before attempting to sleep.
Activities
Midnight departure for the final ascent through volcanic scree to Stella Point (5,756m) at sunrise. Continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895m). Descend to Barafu for a rest, then continue to Mweka Camp (3,100m).
Activities
Descend through rainforest to Mweka Gate (1,640m) in 3-4 hours. Collect your summit certificate, farewell the mountain crew, and transfer to your hotel.
