Mountkenya technnical climb,ascending through the chogoria route using south east face,route,technical climbing,in 7 days,classic rock climbing southern hemisphere
When it’s winter up north,the south face is the best route to climb , this is a 15 pitch rock climb that can be done with a small rack, single 60m rope, and rock shoes (or boots). Lots of novices have been guided up Nelion, even though it takes thirteen rappels to get down (25m raps). January,February and march are the driest months. The rains might stop by December for Christmas holidays.
Day 1: Nairobi- Mt Kenya Bandas camp (2,900m) 3hrs, 10km.
A drive from Nairobi to Chogoria town for lunch after which we take a 4*4 vehicle to drive up where we start our hike via the bamboo forest. The vehicle helps in cutting most of the lower ground. We walk for 3 hours to the Mt Kenya Bandas for dinner and an overnight gaining a 680m ascent.
Day 2: Mt Kenya Bandas camp– Lake Ellis Campsite (3,600m) 3hrs, 9km, 700m ascent.
The journey up the mountain begins after breakfast. We have an optional of using the route via Lake Ellis though we walk a little longer, the sight of the Mugi hill, Ithanguni and they are worth every extra mile. On the other hand we follow the path near the river, all is not lost there is plenty of vegetation and wildlife to enjoy. We stop for lunch and rest then continue to left of the hill where we have dinner and pitch tent for the night.
Day 3: Lake Ellis – Minto’s Camp. (4,200m) 12km, 600m ascent.
After breakfast we continue our journey up the mountain re-joining the normal Chogoria route.it is about a 4 hour hike to our next camp. The Gorges Valley offers the best views of the peaks and when you turn behind the Mugi hills and the Giants Billiards Table are amazing. Close by the Minto’s camp is the temple with a spectacular view of Lake Michaelson beneath it. Dinner and overnight
Day 4:Mintos camp-Austrian camp (4790m)
after breakfast we start the hike along huge rock valley walls,with fascinating and treanding views to the spectacular views of mountkenya standing peaks through the simbacol tarns and upstright to the tooth col peaks on the right side of the mountkenya untill you reach to the austrian camp for lunch after making a successful summit to point lenana 4985m.dinner and overnight at austrian camp.
Day 5:Austrian camp-Nelion -batian peaks 5199m (climbing day south east face of Nelion)
Day 6:Austrian camp -to oldmoses camp-3300m
After a successful summit to nelion and batian descend via shipton camp through simbacol tarn through mackinders valley to oldmoses camp in 6 hours,the descent is gentle which offers the scenic views of high altitude flowering plants such as giant groundsels,moorlands and ostrich lobelia,Dinner and overnight at oldmoses camp.
Day 7:old moses -Nairobi
After the much needed rest and breakfast in the morning, descend to the Sirimon Park gate for about 2-3 hours to catch a vehicle for a drive back to Nairobi arriving late afternoon.
