MACHAME ROUTE CAMPING (whisky route)
mountkenya hikes conducts hiking tours in mount kilimanjaro in tanzania, the route is termed as one of the beautiful to hike up,in the south west of the mountain, the hiking route up(machame route) is different from the descending route (mweka route) of mt kilimanjaro.
the machame route is olso known as the “whisky route”unlike marangu route where you sleep in the huts. From late afternoon sunsets at Shira, to the misty revelations of Kibo’s great Barranco Wall, the Machame Route offers the spunky hiker a continuous scenic slide show. the best number of days to complete the hike is 6 days and this helps in acclimatization. The machame route takes you up to lava tower 4630m and baranco camp 3950m,the ascent and descent helps the body to acclimate and therefore high chances of summit success.
climbing Kilimanjaro is best suited from the months of January through early-March and June through October. The clear skies, great views, and the sunshine makes it the best comfortable hiking conditions. However, there is always the possibility of weather changing dramatically, regardless of the season.
Day 3: Shira Cave (3845m) to Barranco Camp (3960m) Walking now on high moorland, the landscape changes the entire character of the trek. We traverse the southwest side of Kilimanjaro, passing underneath the Lava Tower and the final section of the Western Breach and finally reach camp The day has been spent at altitude (up to 4600m), but we have followed the mountaineering code of ‘walk high, sleep low’ to aid your body’s acclimatization to altitude.
Day 4: Barranco Camp (3960m) to Barafu Camp (4640m Our day starts by descending into the Great Barranco, a huge ravine. We then exit steeply, up the Great Barranco Wall, which divides us from the southeastern slopes of Kibo. It’s a climb over rock, not technical, but long and tiring. Passing underneath the Heim and Kersten glaciers, we head towards the Karanga valley, which is our last stop for fresh water before the summit. Scree now forms the terrain as we walk through arid and desolate land towards Barafu camp.

Day 5: Barafu Camp (4640m) to UHURU PEAK (5895m) & mweka.Very early in the morning (midnight to 2 am), we continue our way to the summit between the Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers. You head in a northwesterly direction and ascend through heavy scree towards Stella Point on the crater rim. This is the most mentally and physically challenging portion of the trek. At Stella Point you will stop for a short rest and will be rewarded with the most magnificent sunrise you are ever likely to see. Faster hikers may view the sunrise from the summit. From Stella Point, you may encounter snow all the way on your 1-hour ascent to the summit. Once at Uhuru Peak you have reached the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the continent of Africa! From the summit we begin our descent by continuing straight down to the Mweka Camp, stopping at Barafu for lunch. You may want gaiters and trekking poles for the loose gravel going down. We arrive at Mweka Camp and enjoy our last evening on the mountain.
